Bilateral surgery may be a good choice for various reasons. A woman may have cancer in both breasts. In many cases women who choose reconstruction following their cancer surgery will wish to have surgery on the opposite breast as well to improve the appearance and symmetry of their breasts. In other cases, young women with breast cancer who have BRCA mutations and are therefore at very high risk for a second cancer during their lifetime may consider having the other breast removed at the same time as their cancer surgery in order to reduce this risk.
