DCIS

Ductal Carcinoma In-Situ. A non-invasive lesion that stays within the breast duct and does not grow beyond it. It is not a cancer, “in situ” means “in place” and the lesion does not pass the basement membrane and cannot spread to the lymph nodes or other organs. DCIS is non life-threatening. However, it is a high risk lesion, that in some cases may develop into an invasive cancer by continuing to grow beyond the basement membrane and this is why the recommendation is to remove DCIS before it can become cancer.
