On the same day that a cancer is removed, something else is put in its place i.e. expanders or implants. With immediate reconstruction, a surgeon performs the first stage to rebuild the breast during the same operation as the mastectomy. Here skin-sparing, nipple-sparing or areola-sparing mastectomy may be used to save enough breast skin to cover the reconstruction.
