Chemotherapy treatment uses drugs to combat and destroy cancer cells in the body. It can be given orally as a pill, or injected intravenously into a vein. The drug gets into the blood and can travel through and affect the whole body. That means it can attack cells at the original cancer site and any cancer cells that may have spread to another part of the body. In many cases, chemotherapy drugs are given in combination, two or three different drugs at the same time. These combinations are called regimens.
